Bedload and nearbed transport of coarse (>1mm) detritus particles were investigated in a tidal creek of a salt marsh in the Westerschelde estuary (south-west Netherlands). Using a fyke net positioned on the creek bottom, hourly transport through the creek was measured during 14 flood-ebb cycles in 1990 and 1991. Transport was bi-directional with flood imports varying between 32 and 2601 g dry weight (DW), and ebb exports varying between 0 and 4737 g DW. In nine of 14 tidal cycles, the creek was functioning as a net exporting system. The material that was exported with the ebb consisted mainly of macrophyte material. The annual loss of coarse organic matter by bedload plus nearbed transport through the creek was estimated to be less than 0-2% of the... |

In order to estimate daily ration of juvenile Potamoschistus lozanoi and to evaluate the effect of tide and daylight on its feeding activity, two 24h samplings were performed, one (in 1985) with high water around midnight, the other (in 1986) with low water around midnight. Incidently, the sampling in 1985 was around neap tide and in 1986 it was around spring tide. The fish were observed to feed more intensively during the night. Daily ration in 1985 was estimated to be about 1% of body ash-free dry weight (ADW). For 1986, the estimate is about 5% of body ADW in spite of similar water temperatures at both sampling dates. It is suggested that a semilunar rhythm, either in the fish or in the invertebrate prey, is the basis of the observed... |

The hyperbenthic mysids and euphausiids of the subtidal shallow coastal waters (the Voordelta) and the Westerschelde estuary in the Delta area (SW Netherlands) were regularly sampled between 1988 and 1991. Two salt marshes in the brackish part of the estuary were studied in the same period. Eight mysid species and one euphausiid species were identified. The spatial and seasonal distribution patterns of all species are described. The most abundant species in the coastal area is Schistomysis spiritus, followed by Mesopodopsis slabberi, Schistomysis kervillei, and Gastrosaccus spinifer. In the marine part of the Westerschelde the same four species are dominant but densities are generally higher in the... |

Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37... |

In considering the use of estuarine habitats by fish assemblages, alternative views of the assemblage are increasingly being explored, based on functional rather than taxonomic aspects. The allocation of all taxa to a number of functional guilds allows a description of fish assemblages in terms of vertical zonation, habitat preferences, including the substratum preference of benthic/demersal species, and dietary preferences. This paper presents the first comparison of the structure of the fish assemblages in the tidal marshes of 6 European estuaries (Bay of Cadiz, Spain; Mira, Portugal; Loire, France; Westerschelde, The Netherlands; Humber, UK; Forth, UK). Cluster analysis was used to compare the assemblages recorded in 29 tidal marsh and associated... |

The utilization of an estuarine brackish marsh in the Westerschelde estuary (southwest Netherlands) by fish and crustaceans visiting the intertidal creeks at rising tides was investigated over an 18 mo period. Samples were collected every month over a tidal cycle. A stow net passively fished the nekton migrating in and out of the marsh habitat. Simultaneous measurements of current speed and waterheight allowed for quantification of the catches. Multivariate clustering and ordination techniques were applied to assess temporal changes in the nekton assemblage. A total of 68 fish and crustacean species were caught but only 38 were regular visitors of the marsh creek. The marsh nekton community proved to have a very stable character. Only 40% of the observed... |

Data are reported on the amphipods and isopods taken in a sledge-type hyperbenthos sampler in the subtidal of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal area in the Westerschelde, the last estuary of the delta area (SW Netherlands). More than 300 samples were collected between 1988 and 1991. Two salt marches in the brackish part of the estuary were sampled monthly with a flume net in 1990 and 1991.A total of 46 amphipod species (42 gammarideans, 3 caprellids and 1 hyperiid), 19 of which are new for the area were recorded. The dominant amphipod species in the Voordelta and the marine part of the Westerschelde estuary are Atylus swammerdami and Gammarus crinicornis. Estimated densities of both species are high comparison to these... |
